Endowment's grants fund insurance for kids
By Lisa M. Krieger
More than 3,000 uninsured Bay Area children benefit from new grants that provide health coverage, the California Endowment said Thursday.
About $2 million is dedicated to providing health care coverage to children in Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, Alameda, Napa and Sonoma counties.
The grants are awarded to counties' Children's Health Initiatives, which provide coverage through the Healthy Kids program to low-income children not eligible for public insurance. The programs offer medical, dental and vision services, as well as prescription drugs and mental health care for children up to the age of 18.
Statewide, an estimated 8,000 children in 18 counties will get a total of $7.5 million in assistance from the endowment, which was established in 1996.
